Ugly Betty S03E08 Review

For the past few episodes, Ugly Betty (UB) has been on such a low note that it was just getting depressing to watch. Don’t get me wrong. I love multidimensionality and there were some lighter moments but the somberness was just buzz-kill.

Well, this week episode, to my pleasure, was much more enjoyable. So it still has all that betty-centric ‘lessons of life’ but it was well balanced with the fun from Amanda, Mark, Willie and some of the other cast. This, to me, is what UB truly was, and the reason I was hooked (although I would have liked it better if it were 30/70).

Sure, all that crazy drama was super fun to watch but honestly, how many sex changes, murder cases and illegitimate children can there be before the show turns into some sort of cheap sleazy amateur freakshow? (Might as well rename it ‘Cirque de Soleil : Ugly Betty’)

Basically, this episodes starts off with Betty being in charge of having the final look for the issue while the Meade editors were in the woods for their annual retreat. Natural disaster occurs which coincidentally was the cover of that issue. Betty tries to save the day, Daniel and Willie did nothing to increase sales, Betty gets blamed, Daniel feels guilty, and make a public apology. Mark and Cliff’s relationship end on a bad note and, Willie and Daniel (and the rest of us) are introduced to Connor’s fiancée, Molly (who has a totally cute lovable personality). All’s well that ends well.

Yeah, I know the summary sucks. But that’s because I want you to watch it yourself and if I wrote out all the interesting details, then I might just get you the script. Amanda is really growing on me lately. Sure I did like her previously but now that she gets to show some smarts and yet remain so air headed is really funny to watch( After all, dumb blonde sexy receptionist has a shelf date.) . Her moving in with Betty was probably the best thing the writers have done in a while. (Did you know AMANDA has a blog? Yes, AMANDA, not Becki Newton.) Frankly, I don’t think I will watch UB if Mark & Amanda (and Willie) were not around. The most noteworthy Amanda moment this episode was when she refused to do anything after the car crashed. (“These stilettos weren’t not meant for pushing // Although maybe they (the stilettos) were meant for something something else?// These stilettos are not made for walking”)

I also should mention how refreshing it was to see Justin get his bite back. I was bored of watching playing-nice-fashion-boy. (Yawn…) Oh yeah, Michael Urie’s (Mark) new hairdo is really nice. It looks so soft too. I definitely love this more than his old curls. Bangs suit him and his personality much better, in my opinion. And the colour is roughly what I am going for too. Maybe I should just take a screenshot of him to the saloon next time. Haha… Hey, I just remembered. Where’s Christina? No wonder I felt something was missing. Bring back the drunk (okay, not always) sarcastic Scottish baby mama, love! I still need to improve my Scottish accent!

OMG!! Amanda said ‘Chillax”. Somehow, it may be a mesh up of two English words, but something about it sounds oh-so Malaysian. Perhaps it’s because of our undying habit to mix, match and blend words. Go, Rojak Language!

p.s. : Updates for my blogs will be rather slow. My thoughts are really disorganised right now. It's not SRFTQ-disorganised, it's more like I-have-a-million-things-running-in-my-head-simultaneously-but-I-can't-focus-long-enough-to-put-it-into-words-disorganised. I did make some drafts, but they are all so messed up. I even had some struggling to focus on finishing this piece. I need some time to get over all this post-exam decompression and decaffeination and all that other stuff...
