Ugly Betty : Premiere Review (Season 4)
As of late, I have felt that SRFTQ has turned into my main blog. It's fun and all, but that was not the main purpose when I first opened this account. Sure, people change, and things change along with them, but I feel that if I were only to write in SRFTQ, I would be 'regressing' (on my own terms), so here I am trying to repopulate this blog with some posts. (That, and I don't feel like writing up on 10 different subjects at the moment.)
(Okay, I blow my cover on the next line, but I had already written up all that stuff above... Note to self : next time, learn to plan...)
O.M.L.G. Ugly Betty is back! Season 4 premiered on Friday night in the US ( I know, TV death slot, but at least it's still there, for now...). I would be lying if I said I wasn't over-excited over the whole matter, so I was... until various 'real world' (do I get credit for using that term?) matters bombarded me a few days before the premiere thus dampening my spirits (more like obliterated, but I digress).
So, back to the premiere, it was a two-episodes special (and luckily it was), so I had to be a very good little monkey and remain frugal with my downloads (but who really needs another Michael Bublé CD anyways? Sorry, Bublé-heads and Jack Donaghy). But I did it (however some nincompoop was not, luckily he/she/it stopped after being warned by the landlord, sucker...) and I left my laptop on all night downloading the episodes all night (although it only takes about 2-3 hours). I even dreamt of it, and there was up to episode 5 in my dreams... Ahh.... Anywho, I got up at 5 to turn the laptop off (after checking it was successfully downloaded) and went back to bed for another 4 hours before watching it this morning, which practically used up my whole morning (but it was all good) and now I'm wasting more time writing about it and not studying... Geez, I really put a damper on my spirits...
Refocus!
Ugly Betty Season 4 starts off with Betty's dream (we are so alike, I tried to mean that in a good way....) where she gets her (adult) braces off (see... but not really) and as with most of Betty's dream, it turns out all wrong, or in this case, crooked. Hilda thinks, from her readings, it is either due to her anxiety of starting her new job or menopause. Time to get EPO Betty. I'm sure Claire has plenty to spare. The producers later teased me or rather, slapped the fact that Ashley Jensen is not longer part of the main cast onto my face, by mentioning Christina, and not even showing a brief flashback. Grr...
Starting at her new job, in her new office, Betty meets her new officemate, MEgan, (that's right, ME-gan, not MEH-gan, MA-gan, ME-gan, like those hillbillies here pronounce that name. I swear, I heard them say ME-gan Fox, and I thought who the hell is that?) who is, obviously, a pain-in-the-ass and antagonist to Betty who seems to have quite a lot of screentime.
It seems that I have gone on and on complaining to (almost no end) about the primiere, so why do I still watch this show? For my favourite cast members (since now Christina is out of the picture),Marc, Amanda, and Wilhemina, Wilhemina Slater, Editor-in-Chief of MODE Magazine, Marc and Amanda. (Sorry Willie). Almost every scene with them, I enjoyed. Marc begins freezing Betty (by disengaging her muffin-to-tape-dispenser line, almost killing himself in the process) but connecting with Justin (seriously, when is this kid coming out already?), Amanda begins to rethink her future (again) after having a look at her future thanks to the temp, and Willie even seems to have more humour in her this season (although I am not a big fan of her accomplice-to-murder-and-chasing-ex-boyfriend plot, it's just getting too soap drama-ey). I know, I know, I was the one who said it was nice to see Willie's maternal side, but this wasn't what I meant... Also, Yaya (from ANTM Cycle 3, who plays the adult Nico) is just stickly and ackward.
Oh, I almost forget to mention Judith Light who plays the brilliant Claire ( Yes, I referenced her above, but that doesn't count.), who is always a delight (now that they seem to have gotten her hair into a more managable situation; I always said, less wind, more hairspray) to have around from high-5-ing Betty for almost killing Marc to having a 'light-hearted banter' with her 'old gal-pal' Willie. Oh, the giggles... Tee-hee.
Now that I have exhausted the pleasantries, I wanna get back to my whining.
Daniel is back from sprinkling half of his former wife in Tibet and immediately becomes needy causing Betty her reputation at work and potentially her job, only to realise the extent of the harm he's causing after the fiasco (and him punching Matt) at the UN Headquarters photoshoot. Why didn't Tyra not teach how to handle this on ANTM? Luckily, Wilhelmina is there to save the day, with her heels. More power to that woman!
Also, Matt seriously needs to grow up... All those overly-obvious pointed remarks? Puh-lease... Who's the idiot here? I just hope they get this over with because I cannot see another perfectly good season go to waste on Betty's dead-boring lovelife (ala Grubstick, Season 2 and end of 3...actually 1 as well, someone shoot him already). At least Matt is easier on the eyes thancrabGrubstick with his new haircut.
Now that I am done with commenting on each character's new plots (most of them anyways), I seem to not have shown why it was such a good thing that this was a two-episode premiere. Well, if it had been two separate episodes, I would probably be interested (but not particularly happy) to wait another week for them to tie up all the loose ends from last season and hence move on with new material. However, with the two-episodes together, we get to get over all the mess and eagerly await the new beginning in a week's time. Yay to shortened attention spans and instant gratification. =D
