Results Time

So after another semester of toil, it’s time to reap its rewards, and by rewards, I mean justify the use of 4 months staring at paper, ink and the oblivion.

In light of my (recent) ongoing stint as a “statistician” (the quotation highlighting the fact that I’m not really one), I would like to present the eight digits that summarises my life for the past 4 months in a slightly different manner. First off, let me present my results for the past semester.

A nice little bump up from my previous semester (partly mainly due one particularly horrible subject). Nothing under 90, and one 99 (although no 100 yet again).

Now for the “statistical” bit of it. Below is the table that calculated the confidence limits (in yellow) for my 5 semesters of university life, starting from my first semester on top, up until my most recent semester at the bottom.

The third column calculates the average score for one particular semester from which the confidence limits are calculated from. As it can be seen, my average has been steadily decreasing since I began, which is a sad thing... Luckily, as I am a “statistician”, none of these decreases (and sadly, that one recent increase) are statistically significant, as they are all contained within the 95% confidence intervals (CI) of one another. The only exception being that that horrible subject was not within the CI of the previous semester (meaning it was a statistically significant decrease) and it was not in the CI of the most recent semester so I did not do as worse as that subject overall in my recent examinations.

And that’s all. In summary, the variations in my scores can be statistically attributed to random variation and has nothing to do with my intellect and the difficulty of the subjects I am taking (with one sore exception). In short, I have been as smart as the day I started university, or as dumb... (especially considering the upper confidence limit shoots over 100, when that is maximum possible score that can be allocated.)
